Last-Ireland is a training programme and support structure to help the scientific community in Ireland to use animals in accordance with best international and national practices.
The current legislation has 4 categories of persons who may work with animals for scientific research purposes.
Category A ‘Persons carrying out procedures’
Category B ‘Persons designing projects ‘
Category C ‘Persons caring for animals ‘
Category D ‘ Persons who are performing euthanasia alone’
The Basic course is suitable for all categories but is primarily aimed at categories A-C
For category C some of the aspects of module 0 will not be necessary e.g. experimental design, surgery introduction, anaesthesia .
The examination questions for this category in module 0 will be adjusted accordingly.
Courses are structured as a Common core 'Day 1' and a species specific 'Day 2' course
It is possible to sign up for a 'day one' course. Complete that exam and subsequently do a species specific 'day 2' course ( eg aquatic or large animal)
The certificate awarded will be according to category based on the examination results.
UK Certification The rodent module is accredited with the Universities Training Group. Students who fulfill the appropiate criteria can be issued with a UK certificate which is acceptable to the Home office .(There is an additional charge of 20 euro)
